Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Book 5, Section 1

When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive — to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.

When you wake tomorrow, what could you remind yourself is a privilege — not a burden — in your life?

Context

Marcus Aurelius wrote Meditations as a private journal, never intended for publication. This passage opens one of his daily reflections, serving as a kind of morning ritual — a reminder to begin the day grounded in gratitude rather than restlessness. Even as emperor of Rome, he recognized that life’s true privileges are simple and universal: consciousness, thought, pleasure, and love.

The Stoics taught that gratitude was not denial of hardship but recognition of life’s inherent gift — that each sunrise offers another opportunity to act with virtue and awareness. Marcus’s reflection is as practical as it is profound: to start the day with gratitude is to disarm complaint and prepare the mind for purpose.
