Is your attention aligned with your intention?

Context

This question invites you to reflect on whether your daily focus matches what you truly want to prioritize in your life. We all have intentions—goals, values, desires. We might say we want to be more present with loved ones, or that we want to prioritize health, growth, or creativity. But the real question is: where are you spending your attention? Your attention is one of your most valuable resources. It determines what you engage with, what you absorb, and what you leave out. If your attention is constantly pulled into distractions, stress, or busywork, it’s hard to make meaningful progress toward your true intentions. This is where alignment comes in. If your intention is to be more present with others, but you spend your free time scrolling on your phone, there’s a disconnect. If your intention is to work on your health, but your attention goes to unhealthy habits or habits of avoidance, there’s a gap. The Stoics and other philosophers understood that we cannot control external events, but we can control where we direct our attention and energy. Aligning your attention with your intention isn’t about doing everything perfectly—it’s about choosing to focus on what truly matters, even in small moments. So ask yourself: Where is your attention right now? And is it serving the intentions you’ve set for your life? What might shift if you focused more consistently on what matters most to you? When your attention and intention are in harmony, you move closer to becoming the person you aim to be.
