Do you feel safe with your own thoughts?
— Vitros, Daily Prompt
Context
That’s a powerful question—simple on the surface, but it cuts deep.
Feeling safe with your own thoughts means being able to sit with your mind—your memories, fears, dreams, and doubts—without needing to run, distract, or numb yourself. Many of us fill our lives with noise: music, scrolling, constant activity. Sometimes that’s just modern life. But sometimes, it’s because we’re not sure what we’ll find in the silence.
Why does this matter? Because philosophy begins where distraction ends. If you can’t sit with your own thoughts, how will you ever understand what you truly value, believe, or want? Being alone with your mind is how you get to know yourself—not the version you show others, but the real you underneath.
But don’t worry if the answer is “no.” Most people struggle with this. The mind can be a chaotic place. The goal isn’t to control every thought or feel perfectly serene—it’s to learn how to notice your thoughts without being afraid of them. That’s the beginning of self-knowledge and, in many traditions, wisdom.
So ask yourself: when the distractions fade and it’s just you and your thoughts, do you listen—or do you run? What might change if you stayed a little longer?
