A step counter added 2,491 steps a day
In randomized trials, people given step counters walked 2,491 more steps a day than people without them.
In randomized trials, people given step counters walked about 2,500 more steps a day than people without them.
The study
This systematic review looked at studies of adults using pedometers. In the randomized trials it included, pedometer users increased their activity by 2,491 steps a day more than people in the control groups. Having a step goal was an important predictor of walking more.
Starting small
A count makes walking visible. Checking your step count for a few days to see where you are, then setting a modest goal a little above it, is a gentle way to start.
