Short breaks at work really do restore energy

Across 22 study samples, short breaks during work gave people more energy and less fatigue.

Short breaks during work gave people more energy and less fatigue.

The study

This meta-analysis combined 22 study samples on micro-breaks, which are short breaks taken between work tasks. The breaks gave a small but significant boost to energy and a small drop in fatigue. They did not significantly improve overall performance, though longer breaks helped performance more, and demanding tasks may need breaks longer than ten minutes.

Starting small

A few minutes away from a task, to stretch, get water, or look out a window, is an easy break to build into a working day. Setting a reminder can help it happen.
