A little time in nature, a better mood

Across 32 studies, brief time in natural settings lifted positive mood and modestly lowered negative mood.

Brief time in natural settings lifted positive mood and modestly lowered negative mood.

The study

This meta-analysis brought together 32 studies on contact with natural environments and how people felt. Across them, time in nature was linked with a moderate rise in positive mood and a smaller but consistent drop in negative mood.

Starting small

A short time outside can be enough to notice a difference. A few minutes in a park, a garden, or anywhere with trees and open sky is an easy way to fit it into the day.
